Tips on Communicating with your Children

Most parents have hard time communicating with their children, especially teenagers. In order to have a decent conversation with their children, the parent must establish eye contact with the child or children. And if you want to have a warm and direct conversation, your child must preferably be within eye level. If ever your children approach you asking for a conversation, it is important that you set aside the things that you are doing and focus all your attention to your child.

A calm and comforting tone in your voice is ideal if ever you are giving instructions while a firm and stern one for lectures. You must not smile or laugh when they do something wrong, or have indifference or angry tone when they done something right. Doing so would be against the appropriate development of positive behavior and values.

Self-Esteem: Your Child’s Armor against Danger.

As any parents would, we would do almost everything for our children just to protect them. In this imperfect world, there are lots of things that could and may discourage, hurt, scare or even endanger the children. The best thing you can do to your children is to boost your child’s self-esteem and develop your child’s skills on how to deal with certain situations.

It is very important that your child must have enough self esteem to overcome the hardships that he or she may face. Self esteem is the overall self appraisal of the person’s worth. It is how we characterize ourselves affects our enthusiasm, deeds and behaviors. It also influences our emotional judgment. Developing the self esteem of your child must be primary concern while keeping your child safe from physical injury is secondary. There are several programs these days that help develop a child’s self esteem. Furthermore, self-esteem also enhances the child’s communication skills and behavior.

Praise and positive reinforcement alone won’t automatically make the child feel better. As a parent, you must provide your children with love, care and understanding. Those who are given with lots of love and are cared for by their parents could still feel inadequate and inept that will eventually lead to low self-esteem. That is why a balance of everything must be given.

Remember, conveying positive values and having constant positive communication and conversations to your children can bring about a healthy self esteem. And if your child has a healthy self esteem, your child will overcome all the hardships that he or she will face in the future.
