What Do They Teach at Acting Schools?

If you look at what is being taught at acting schools, you would find a number of different modules being covered there. It would really be very difficult to cover all that here. But we are going to concentrate on an overview of some of the important courses that you might have to study if you enroll into acting schools.

There are two basic tools that an actor uses. It is his body and his voice. And that is why acting schools teach you how to both these tools. You would be trained so that you could be heard, understood and felt. In addition to that you would be concentrating on singing, breath work, relaxation and posture so that your voice could be made effective.

As for an actor’s body, well it is his real weapon. Acting schools concentrate on developing this tool so that you could perform anywhere and anyhow. Acting schools would teach you to understand movement and different techniques related to it. Improvisation is something that has also to be learnt. It is very important aspect of acting and that is why acting schools concentrate on games and exercises to teach students make use of their imagination and to teach them live for the moment. Acting schools teach students how to work with others without any planning in advance as such.

This is the world of marketing. So, if you are an actor you would have to learn to market yourself. You would be constantly asked for auditions and that is why acting schools teach you a lot about facing auditions. It would concentrate on developing your ability to read at a moment’s notice and offering them experiences of live auditioning. Most of the acting schools focus on Shakespeare. It is believed that if you can play Shakespeare, you can play virtually anything and that is why acting schools focus on classical languages and how to speak it properly.

Then acting schools also focus on theatre and television. These also form part of education for actors. Actors learn about history of acting styles and techniques. Acting schools teach them the difference between shooting for a film and shooting for television, sitcoms, commercials, chat shows and soap operas. It is essential for an actor to minutely understand the difference between different genres if one really wants to be a versatile actor.

It is therefore essential that you join an acting school if you really want to explore your potential acting talents.
