Today around 70% of divorces are initiated by women, who now enjoy the benefits of equal pay and treatment, as well as protection against domestic violence. Many of these women are driven by their financial greed for, after all, women are more financially independent than before. However, the most touted reason is adultery.
The Case for Divorce Today Women are increasingly getting the upper hand in divorce.
After two years and nine months of marriage, Melissa Miller was awarded a divorce settlement of £5m. Her grounds? The adultery of her former husband who is a multi-millionaire fund manager.
Although Mr. Miller appealed to the House of Lords to cut the settlement which meant a pay-out of almost £5,000 a day, it was Melissa who won the day.
Sandra Davies, head of family law at Mishcon de Reya, says, "The consequence of Miller is that there will be more prenuptial agreements, with people trying to protect their assets, and more people deciding to co-habit rather than marry because they will be concerned about what could happen to their money. The other concern is that it seems to introduce the concept of fault and punitive awards. I think it could have a huge impact."
We’ve come a long way from Henry VIII to Melissa Miller, and the trend now is fewer marriages and more divorces. The time is not far though when marriage as a sacred institution will become a thing of the past.
